Nike Air Max: air bubble for a new era
The history of the Nike Air Max is so rich in innovative models and iconic variations year after year that it could be a masterclass for lovers of stylish sneakers . Little impromptu sneakerology lesson.
Flashback to 1979, the year the American giant launched the first model of the Nike Air Tailwind during the Honolulu marathon. This running shoe is one of the first sneakers to introduce the famous air-cushioned sole , a technology inspired by a NASA discovery. If this technical innovation is not directly visible in the midsole of the shoe, this detail was corrected in 1987 with the drop of the first version of what would become a dynasty: the Nike Air Max 1 . It was its illustrious creator Tinker Hatflied who decided more than ten years later to bring out the air bubble and integrate a window into its base, thus signing one of the most iconic silhouettes of the American brand. Its commercial success is also a breath of fresh air for the American equipment manufacturer.
9O's: Series drop for the Air Max
The versions that came out during the following decade all highlighted the strong point and the number 1 marketing argument of the Air Max line, its encapsulated air pocket. Each variation then reinvents the original concept of Hatfiled. The Air Max 90 has more air injected into its sole and the 180 has a capsule visible at 180 degrees and over the entire height of the midsole. The Nike Air Max BW (for Big Window) models have a wider opening, the Air Max 93 has a 270 degree window. Finally, the Nike Air Max 95, 97 and 98 also revisit this little bubble of technology designed for running. Today it is more of a lifestyle shoe than a sneaker designed for athletics tracks. The street has definitely adopted the Air Max for style more than performance.
Nike Air Max Day: the date to mark with a white pair
At the start of the 2010s, Nike decided to slow down the pace on the drops of its iconic sneaker. However, it finds a place of choice in its marketing strategy. To celebrate the release of its first model in 1987, the Oregon firm officially inaugurated the very first Air Max Day on March 26, 2014. This anniversary has been celebrated each year since with launches of special and limited editions in colors and varied styles or through exceptional events alongside artists or personalities, all lovers of the swoosh.
